7 Fool-Proof Ways How to Make Your Hair Extension Last Longer

You’ve spent quite a few big bucks on your hair extensions. So, you want them to last as long as possible without getting tacky and looking like a storm passed through. So, what can you do to extend the life of your hair extensions?

Not to worry. We got you.

Here are 7 fool-proof ways to make your hair extensions last longer.

1. Start with quality hair

Always buy high-quality, 100% human hair extensions if you want them to last. Anything else and no matter what you do, they won’t be able to hold their sheen, form, and beauty for long.

2. Avoid oil-based products

Depending on the extension type, oil-based products can wreak havoc on an extension. Imagine extensions slipping out as you pass your hand through your tresses. We’re sure that’s not something you will want. So, make sure to read the care instructions thoroughly, and ask your stylist for recommendations if you’re unsure.

3. Treat with care

Wash your extensions as necessary. If they are semi-permanent extensions, you shouldn’t go to sleep with your extensions wet, or you will have a serious price to pay the following day with a detangling mess. With clips in and other temporary extensions, make sure that they are dried properly and that you have the right tools to care for them e.g., brushes. Have regular conditioning sessions, just like you would with your natural hair.

4. Don’t over style

Hair extensions like micro links and fusion bonding are semi-permanent and can last anywhere between 4-6 months. So, naturally, you’ll be tempted to want to try a variety of styles. But, there is such a thing as doing too much, and you want to avoid that at all costs.

5. Limit heat styling

Following on from our tip above, it’s best to avoid too many heat stylings. Curling irons and other hot styling tools used too often will only serve to dry out the hair. And when you do use heat, remember that extensions often need less work than our natural hair. So be careful with how long you keep the iron and other heat-related tools in your hair. And because they’re human hair, you can use heat protectant when heat styling as necessary to protect your extensions.

6. Store your hair extensions properly

If you’re wearing extensions that come out at the end of the day – like clip-ins and wigs – make sure to store them properly. Don’t just unclip or take them off and drop them anywhere. Gently remove your extensions and store them in a cool, dry place, or on your wig stand. The best way to ensure you always do this is to create a hair routine that makes this an easy 1-2 process every day. For long-term storage make sure the extensions are clean and properly dried, then store in an air-tight container.

7. Cover while sleeping

And last but not least – your sleep cap. We know you know this already. But it bears repeating. If you’re wearing semi-permanent extensions, you should always sleep in a satin bonnet to protect your tresses. Keep your cap by your bed so that even if you get in before covering up, it’s right there in close reach.

There you have it. The 7 ways to care for your hair extensions and make them last longer.

So, tell us, how long have you been able to keep your hair extensions? And were you using high quality, 100% human hair like what we sell here at SL Raw Virgin Hair?
